Bunker No.3 And Other RiPA News

On Friday 12th March, RiPA will be veturing up t'north of the UK to hold a research study at Bunker No.3.

Although the previous two failed to come up with any conclusive evidence of being 'haunted', there has been interesting events at both.

RiPA are currently conducting a theory on why these buildings of historical interest have many reports of hauntings attributed to them and hope to compile it all together soon.

So will B-No.3 give us the empirical evidence that we need to prove the existence of ghosts or will it just be another place that'll contribute to the RiPA Report?

It does seem strange that although RiPA are conducting a mass study into the hauntings of theaters, these bunkers keep cropping up!. This is not by any means a bad thing as it helps RiPA prepare for the hush-hush MOD assignment later this year. Ok, that all sounds very "ipcress files-ish" but its all we can say at this current moment in time.

So what else is happening in the world of RiPA?

Also, the latest on the Simon Singh/Libel Reform situation.

There has been some interesting discussions taking place centering around this whole event.
Share your views, whether you are for it or not, on the RiPA forums.
I have been asked a lot as to why RiPA is showing such an interest in this case.
Let me start from the beginning and I shall explain why its important that ALL Paranormal Research Teams should pay heed to the event;

The Keep Libel Laws out of Science campaign was launched following the use of the English libel laws to silence critical discussion of medical practice and scientific evidence discouraging debate, denying the public access to the full picture and encouraging the use of the courts to silence critics. The British Chiropractic Association has sued Simon Singh for libel. The scientific community would have preferred that it had defended its position about chiropractic through an open discussion in the medical literature or mainstream media.

On 4th June 2009 Simon Singh announced that he was applying to appeal the judge's recent pre-trial ruling in this case, in conjunction with the launch of this support campaign to defend the right of the public to read the views of scientists and writers.

Over 20,000 people from the worlds of science, journalism, publishing, comedy, literature and law signed up to Keep Libel Laws out of Science and call for an urgent review of English law of libel. Supporters include RiPA, Chris French, Richard Wiseman, Dara O'Briain, Stephen Fry, Lord Rees of Ludlow, Ricky Gervais, Martin Amis, Jonathan Ross, James Randi, Professor Richard Dawkins, Penn & Teller and Professor Sir David King, former Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Government.

As it stands, this means that people like RiPA and new RiPA friends such as LightSeekers and Haunted Vibes could face being sued for refuting a paranormal claim or program. Even if it is a simple blog, you can still get in to a messy legal suit.

So, What has happened since our last update?
Well lets kick it off with the Simon Singh court case.
RiPA's source, who actually attended the trial, say that things seem to be in Simons favour. I suppose it helps when the judge is easily confused between the chiropractioners out there and the recent Homeopathy outcry.

Right, over to Homeopathy now. If you have been following the case, you will be aware of the effect that the '10:23' event had. Since then, the government are passing a bill to stop funding Homeopathy and are withdrawing it from the NHS.
But maybe you still believe that there 'IS' something to it.
But what if Homeopaths were to turn around and say 'Yeah, its all one big joke'?

Well they have! Thats right, in a stunning announcement, the North American Society of Homeopaths (NASH) admitted that the whole field of medicine called homeopathy was a big joke that got out of hand.
We were surprised how many people fell for it," said Manfred Mueller, NASH president, "I mean, who could seriously believe that some herb, diluted a thousand times less than a thimble-full mixed up in the Earth's oceans, could actually do anything?"

Lets talk parapsychology.
Leading academia's and
scientists are trying to withdraw parapsychology all together. It has always been argued as whether or not it is a 'science' or a 'pseudoscience', RiPA have even held talks on that issue. but now, it seems they feel it is a total waste of time. They believe that all that could be done is done.
From Ganzfield to PK experiments, all the possible experiments and protocols have been exhausted.

RiPA believes this is a very closed minded view of parapsychology. Sure, one key problem with this field is that people tend to do the same experiments time and time again, just getting the same results.
We need to devise new, more up-to-date experiments.

Keep Libel Out Of Science

Something a little different for this update.
For sometime now RiPA has been following the law suit against Simon Singh by the British Chiropractic Association (BCA). But first, lets speak a bit more about who Simon is.

After completing a PhD in particle physics, Simon Singh joined the BBC and worked as a director and producer on programmes such as Tomorrow's World and Horizon. He has also presented programmes on Radio 4, BBC4 and Channel 4. He is best known as the author of Fermats Last Theorem, The Code Book and Big Bang.

In less than a week Simon's appeal hearing will change British Libel Law history.

So what did Simon do that was so bad and how does it affect the paranormal world?

Simon published an article in the Guardian in April 2008 in which he discussed chiropractic treatment with reference to the British Chiropractic Association.

In a passage describing the BCA’s claims about the treatment of a number of childhood ailments, Singh wrote that ‘even though there is not a jot of evidence’ the BCA ‘happily promotes bogus treatments’.
Sounds a bit similar to the recent '10:23' Homeopathy circumstance.

Despite the article being published in the Guardian, Singh was sued personally. Mr Justice Eady decided on the issue of meaning in May 2009, and found that Singh’s comments were statements of fact, rather than expressions of opinion, which implied that the BCA was being deliberately dishonest. It was a meaning that Singh has said he never intended. Eady refused to grant leave to appeal, although permission was granted by the Court of Appeal itself in October 2009.

As a result of this case, the charity Sense About Science launched a petition for libel reform. Richard Dawkins has said that if Singh loses, it would have ‘major implications on the freedom of scientists, researchers and other commentators to engage in robust criticism of scientific, and pseudoscientific, work’.

These implications of libel law reform
are important not only for scientists
but for journalists, broadcasters, bloggers, campaigners and evne paranormal research groups like ourselves - indeed, for anyone who supports freedom of speech. This means that we actually risk getting sued if we were to criticize Living TV's 'Most Haunted' series or TAPS for our American audience.

This is not about trying to get rid of libel laws at all. Indeed, if the cost of libel cases could be reduced, the libel laws could be used by MORE people with a valid case for redress. At the moment, only the rich and powerful can afford to bring cases, often purely with the aim of bullying their critics into silence.

So the research that RiPA do, as well as fellow groups like Parascience and APRU could come under fire if we are not careful.

Lets take RiPA's 'Test the Mediums' project.
We are willing to accept any Medium who is prepared to undergo the strict protocol that has been put in place. We are even open for some subtle adaptations of it in order to help the Medium. Lets say Derek Acorah accepts the challenge, he sits through the subjects, gives them all readings and its all going well. Then its time to collate the results.
UH-OH! Mr Acorah has failed.
RiPA will then need to write a report about this stating that Acorah did not make the challenge.

His people could then sue RiPA! Surely this is not right? So in order to help Simon and help the future of scientific study, Simon has come up with a plan. The following is from Simon himself:

Dear Friends,

I’ve had an idea – an unusual idea, but I think it might just work.

As you know, England’s chilling libel laws need to be reformed. One way to help achieve this is for 100,000 people to sign the petition for libel reform before the political parties write their manifestos for the election. We have 17,000 signatures, but we really need 100,000, and we need your help to get there.

My idea

My idea is simple: if everyone who has already signed up persuades just one more person each week to sign the petition then we will reach our goal within a month!

One person per week is all we need, but please spread the word as much as you can. In fact, if you persuade 10 people to sign up then email me (simon@simonsingh.net) and I promise to thank you by printing your name in my next book … which I will start writing as soon as I have put my own libel case behind me. I cannot say when this will be, but it is a very real promise. My only caveat is that I will limit this to the first thousand people who recruit ten supporters.

When persuading your friends remember to tell them:

(a) English libel laws have been condemned by the UN Human Rights Committee.

(b) These laws gag scientists, bloggers and journalists who want to discuss matters of genuine public interest (and public health!).

(c) Our laws give rise to libel tourism, whereby the rich and the powerful (Saudi billionaires, Russian oligarchs and overseas corporations) come to London to sue writers because English libel laws are so hostile to responsible journalism. (In fact, it is exactly because English libel laws have this global impact that we welcome signatories to the petition from around the world.)

(d) Vested interests can use their resources to bully and intimidate those who seek to question them. The cost of a libel trial in England is 100 times more expensive than the European average and typically runs to over £1 million.

(e) Three separate ongoing libel cases involve myself and two medical researchers raising concerns about three medical treatments. We face losing £1 million each. In future, why would anyone else raise similar concerns? If these health matters are not reported, then the public is put at risk.

My experience has been sobering. I’ve had to spend £100,000 to defend my writing and have put my life on hold for almost two years. However, the prospect of reforming our libel laws keeps me cheerful.

Haunted Theaters: A RiPA Project

Throughout history, The theater has been a place of tragedy and joy, heartbreak and love, sadness and happiness etc, so is it any wonder, with all these powerful emotions going on in one place, that theaters are one of the most allegedly haunted establishments around?

There are theaters in nearly every town, county and city in the UK. Differing in shape and size, but all have a 'story' to tell.

Be it the lust-lorn actress who took her life for she failed to take the lead role or the man who killed his fellow thespian because he thought it was his fault the play didn't go well, the stories may change but the hauntings remain.

So RiPA thought its about time a serious investigation into these alleged haunts took place. What really makes the theater such a place for spirits to dwell?
Is it their love of the arts? The fact that they are just looking on to make sure future shows bode well? or could it be something a lot simpler such as slightly askew stage platforms, structural imperfections or even just simple infra-sound?

Whatever it is RiPA hope to collate a selection of case studies to try and finally get to the bottom of why theaters are one of the most haunted type of buildings.

study, RiPA are interested in
hearing your tales of theater hauntings.
Maybe you work in one, perform
in one or just visit a certain one occasionally.

This particular theater is a good start to this project and RiPA looks forward to visiting many more in order to bring to you an up-to-date listing of haunted theaters and a conclusion, positive or not, in why they are so attractive to paranormal phenomenon.

Goodbye Jan, Hello Feb

So what better way to introduce February than with a catch up of the '10:23' campaign.
For those that are not familiar with the '10:23', let me briefly summerise it.

At 10:23am on January 30th, more than four hundred homeopathy sceptics nationwide took part in a mass homeopathic 'overdose' in protest at Boots' continued endorsement and sale of homeopathic remedies, and to raise public awareness about the fact that homeopathic remedies have nothing in them.

Sceptics and consumer rights activists publicly swallowed an entire bottle of homeopathic 'pillules' to demonstrate that these 'remedies', prepared according to a long-discredited 18th century ritual, are nothing but sugar pills.

The protest aims to raise public awareness about the reality of homeopathy, and put further pressure on Boots to live up to its responsibilites as the 'scientist on the high street' and stop selling treatments which do not work.

So Thats one investigation down, many more to come and go.

As some of you know, the RiPA's teamed up with Marks & Spencer in Milton Keynes to host a 'charity ghost hunt'. This was held in a not-so-secret bunker "oop 't' north" of the country.

The investigation went smoothly well and everybody had a good time. Minds and opinions changed throughout the night into the possibilities that the paranormal may actually exist.

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank Rod & Roger for the hospitality that they provided and the help that made this event possible. Also, a thanks goes out to MKPA (Milton Keynes Play Association)
for the use of the transport. A report on this event will be online soon as will the pics and maybe some video footage. Will this media provide anything ghostly? Well, that'll be for you, the viewer, to decide.

Next up on RiPA's agenda is a
project that'll lead us to many haunted theaters.
Most theatres have more than their fair share of
ghostly activity and RiPA hopes to find out why.
Dont worry, RiPA is not going all 'Most Haunted' and visiting the stage to big ourselves up, we are going as theaters always speak of ghostly activity and this project will be an interesting look into why theatres tend to be as haunted as they are.
This will lead us from Milton Keynes to London, Lincoln to Boston.
The project will be a most interesting
compilation of alleged haunts and hopefully put to rest
claims of ghostly guests and starstruck spooks.

2010 - Start of a new year for RiPA

Well well well, here we are in 2010 and how we have all changed..... or not! There has been a few changes within the RiPA world though in order to make the whole RiPA ship flowing smoother than ever.

So whats on the cards for RiPA at the start of this year?
First off, we're off to London to join Prof Chris French on a talk about the 'Psychology of Anomalous Experiences'.

This talk will provide an introduction to the sub-discipline of anomalistic psychology, which may be defined as the study of extraordinary phenomena of behaviour and experience, in an attempt to provide non-paranormal explanations in terms of known psychological and physical factors. This approach will be illustrated with examples relating to a range of ostensibly paranormal phenomena.

It should be a very interesting talk and maybe one that we'll do in Milton Keynes. We will also be hosting public talks in Milton Keynes on topics from Pareidolia to Pseudosciences. Keep checking back for news on future RiPA events. RiPA aims to bring the paranormal to Milton Keynes in 2010.

So RiPA's first field trip is soon upon us and gee, its gonna be good. This is the charity event we are hosting on behalf of Marks & Spencers' charity TVACAA. There have been a few alterations in arranging this event but trust when we say its all worth it. If we had the funding of Antix we could broadcast it and call it 'Ghost Hunting with.... M&S'!
Talking of Antix.... Lets talk Most Haunted Live 2010

Its also that time again when the
Most Haunted Live crew do their bit for 2010.
And yes, RiPA will be there casting its watchful eye over the events. This time the MH team are in RAF West Raynham.
Raynham was a Royal Air Force station located to the west of the village of West Raynham in Norfolk, England. It opened in the 1930s and was operational throughout World War II. It closed in 1994. Nearly sixteen years after its closure, the derelict buildings still lay abandoned across the Norfolk skyline.

It all sounds very nice but is it haunted? Apparently so! There is a ghost of a downed WW2 Polish pilot who crashed on the flight line on R.A.F. West Raynham. This fella is seen walking through walls, sitting in main dining room, and walking down the back stairway towards the kitchen. He appears to haunt Room 7 of the Officer's Mess.

Also, a boy and a girl were sleeping in the same room once, they slept in separate beds, the boy could feel the presence of someone but couldn’t see anyone, after a while he could feel that someone sat down on his bed, when he looked up no one was there and then something laid down next to him and started hugging him. There was also a picture taken of the house from the outside and in one of the windows you could see an old man looking out of the window with an old lady next to him.

There is also a haunted theatre and hotel nearby, will the Most Haunted Live crew visit them too?

The End Of The Year is Near....

So as another year draws to a close, You would of thought RiPA will hang up their jackets and take some time off over the festive period. Alas, no such chance! Instead we are already making plans for the upcoming months. First off is the Charity gig with M&S and TVAAC, the location for that event is very very atmospheric and of course allegedly very very haunted.
Will discarnate souls join us on the night of 16th January? Who knows, keep tuned to find out more.

Ok Ok, I hear ya, so whats with the 'GOREZONE' logo above? Well let me tell you, in the new year RiPA hope to be teaming up with 'GOREZONE' on their yearly event of 'The Weekend Of Horror'. More news on this real soon.

Not only will RiPA be working with 'GOREZONE'
but we also hope to get a series of programes
to do with the paranormal comissioned hosted by the one and only Emily Booth. If plans come to fruitition then its already looking like its going to be a huge year for RiPA.

For those who dont know, Emily Booth is the UK's hottest scream queen and the voice of Zone Horror.
Not only is she the voice of horror but has also appeared in a number of them; Evil Aliens, Doghouse, Pervirella, Cradle of Fear and Inferno. No doubt she has alot more to come. And yes, I am along time avid admirer...I mean watcher....I mean stalk.......*ahem*....

Anyhow, talks are going on in regards to the project so thats just another thing to keep coming back for.

So what else is happening in the new year? Well we will be hosting lots more public talks on subjects within the paranormal world, this will include 'Sleep Paralysis' 'Are We Programmed to Believe In Beliefs?' and a current study that im looking into is that of 'Why Reincarnation/Past-Life Regression May Actually Exist'.

So What is RiPA All About?

Phew.... busy times at RiPA Rectory due to charity events, theatre productions, documentry projects oh, and paranormal researching! So where to begin with this update? Lets go back to basics and take this time to talk a bit more about RiPA's ethics and website.

RiPA is probably different from most 'ghost hunting' groups out there. For one, we dont do 'ghost hunting', we do paranormal research. Whats the different I hear you ask?

Well let me tell you in an abridged way, 'Most Haunted' are 'ghost hunters'. They go to allegedly haunted places with a camera and some funky gadgets in the hope of detecting ghosts. And thats pretty much it. Paranormal Research goes a lot deeper. RiPA are a Paranormal Research team that do projects, talks, educate, experiments etc on all things paranormal. Of course, this also includes visiting supposedly haunted places.

This brings me on to an fantastic Xmas treat for the RiPA's, after 5 years of negotiating, I have finally managed to secure a fantastic location whose history is deep and interesting.
What makes this extra special is that this location may not be around for much longer so RiPA are honored to have the chance to conduct a study.

What does RiPA stand for?
'Research into Paranormal Anomalistics'
A lot of people ask us about the 'Anomalistics' part as its
not the most common of words. 'Anomalistics' may be defined as the study of extraordinary phenomena of behaviour and experience, including (but not restricted to) those which are often labeled "paranormal". It is directed towards understanding bizarre experiences that many people have without assuming a priori that there is anything paranormal involved. It entails attempting to explain paranormal and related beliefs and ostensibly paranormal experiences in terms of known psychological and physical factors.

A more detailed explanation can be found on the RiPA's 'About' page.
This brings me on to the website. Although most of RiPA's work happens behind the scenes away from the website, somethings we do will be mentioned other may not, the website works as a great resource for your educational needs.

RiPA have many papers on the site which range from the historical aspect of techniques to more recent studies on sleep paralysis and why its important to have insurance in this day and age.

RiPA are also hosting a project in collaboration with Golds University College on mediumship.
Now we have had many applicants come forward, but none have ever gone for the actual project.
The project in question is not humiliate or embarass the participants but more to give us a greater insight in to the way mediumship works. I would of thought that, due to the hard time mediums/psychics are getting at the moment, that people with this 'gift' would jump at the chance to prove to the critics that this ability does exist.

RiPA: Not just a Paranormal Research Team...

Its been a while since a RiPA update but things have been pretty hectic back at the RiPA Rectory.
With lectures and talks with APRU to working on new projects with various other sources, things have been piling up.

So, whats with the M&S logo? Dont worry, RiPA has not sold out, but we have struck up a deal working alongside M&S and their charity 'Air Ambulance: Berks I Oxon I Bucks' This will involve talks, visits and fundraising for the Air Ambulance.

This particular charity, known as 'The Thames Valley & Chiltern Air Ambulance Trust' (TVACAA) mission is to:

Assist in the provision of an air ambulance service.

Relieve sickness and injury.

Serve the counties of Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire .

TVACAA functions solely to raise the funds required to keep the helicopter flying. We need £2 million to cover our annual running costs. The charity is not involved in tasking the helicopter or in its operation.

TVACAA was established in 1999 as one of six air ambulance charities sponsored by the Automobile Association (AA) for a period of three years. The charity itself was incorporated in 2000.
In January 2007, the base for the helicopter was relocated from White Waltham Aero Club near Maidenhead to RAF Benson in Oxfordshire.

In July 2008 they took delivery of the EC135 Eurocopter, liveried in a distinctive red and yellow colour scheme, with the registration of G-HBOB reflecting the three counties it serves. So if you see it flying around you now know why!!

Anyway, back to the world of the paranormal. So it happened, Derek Acorah DID make contact with
'The King Of Pop' Michael Jackson, in a so called 'live seance'. Let me just state here that the RiPA's attended an evening with a trance medium a couple of weeks prior to the seance, who clearly stated that Michael would not come through!
But Derek knows better and did, clearly reach MJ.......

Or so the viewing public were led to believe.
Now, throughout my time of being involved in the paranormal world, I like to see what really happened during seances and readings, especially more so with the lovely folk in the public eye. Sooooo it seemed only right to do this with the Derek Acorah / Michael Jackson Seance.
