RiPA: Research into Paranormal Anomalistics:
Definition: The use of scientific methods to evaluate anomalies with the aim of finding a rational explanation.
Signature: The study of phenomena that appear to be at odds with current scientific understanding.
With over ten years in the field, RiPA was born to examine the paranormal using the Anomalistic techniques.
Anomalistics is the use of scientific methods to evaluate anomalies (phenomena that fall outside of current understanding), with the aim of finding a rational explanation.
Or in other words its the scientific study of anomalies defined as claims of phenomena not generally accepted by the bulk of the scientific community.
RiPA works on the basis that "unexplained phenomena exist," but that most can be explained through the application of scientific scrutiny.
This enables our research studies to be unbiased and true,
without getting involved in the believer/skeptic argument.
Anomalistics may be defined as the study of extraordinary phenomena of behaviour and experience, including (but not restricted to) those which are often labeled "paranormal". It is directed towards understanding bizarre experiences that many people have without assuming a priori that there is anything paranormal involved. It entails attempting to explain paranormal and related beliefs and ostensibly paranormal experiences in terms of known psychological and physical factors.
If our subject fails to be be explained away using the anomalistic approach, then what we have left is more that likely, paranormal, and that is what we are ultimately looking for.
What Is Anomalistics?
Before an explanation can be considered valid within anomalistics, it must fulfill four criteria.
It must be based on conventional knowledge and reasoning;
it must be kept simple and be unburdened by speculation or overcomplexity;
the burden of proof must be placed on the claimant and not the researcher;
and the more extraordinary the claim, the higher the level of proof required.
There is a lot more to it than above but thats pretty much the jist of it.
Its not just things that go bump in the night:
RiPA also deal with any unsubstantiated scientific claims.
This can range from Homeopathy to the Anti-Vaxer's out there.
RiPA are a big part of ousting 'Woo woo' claims and Pseudoscience.
Ok, I know that may seem a bit weird coming from a predominantly paranormal interest organization but it is this that makes RiPA different from the rest.
A quick look around the website and on our forums will help to build a bigger picture of what RiPA are all about.
